Remarks on the Well-Posedness of the Nonlinear Cauchy Problem

We show that hyperbolicity is a necessary condition for the well posedness of the noncharacteristic Cauchy problem for nonlinear partial differential equations. We give conditions on the initial data which are necessary for the existence of solutions and we analyze Hadamard’s instabilities in Sobolev spaces. We also show that genuinely nonlinear equations raise new interesting problems.

Determining an Unbounded Potential from Cauchy Data in Admissible Geometries

In [4] anisotropic inverse problems were considered in certain admissible geometries, that is, on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary which are conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean line and a simple manifold. In particular, it was proved that a bounded smooth potential in a Schrödinger equation was uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in dimensions n ≥ 3. In ...

Remarks on completeness of lattice-valued Cauchy spaces

We study different completeness definitions for two categories of lattice-valued Cauchy spaces and the relations between these definitions. We also show the equivalence of a so-called completion axiom and the existence of a completion.

Remarks on the Cauchy problem for the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations

Motivated by applications to vortex rings, we study the Cauchy problem for the threedimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations without swirl, using scale invariant function spaces. If the axisymmetric vorticity ωθ is integrable with respect to the two-dimensional measure dr dz, where (r, θ, z) denote the cylindrical coordinates in R, we show the existence of a unique global solution, whic...
